Randburg
Fire Station
Turning a crumbling ruin into a flagship fire station
The Randburg Fire Station involved the refurbishment of the existing derelict fire station to provide a modern facility enabling increased response times by Emergency Management Services. The project involved the demolition of the existing living quarters comprising three apartment blocks, and the complete gutting of the existing buildings including wiring and plumbing. The new facility comprises a south wing housing a fully equipped gym, games room, dinning and kitchen facility, locker and shower rooms, a dispatch/report room, communications room and EMS storage.
The north wing serves the administrative offices and a ‘Be Safe’ Centre – a facility which provides the local community with fire safety training. The first Floor provides office accommodation for the fire chiefs and a 30-person board room. The external buildings house one ladder truck, two rescue trucks, two ambulances and a 10,000l water tanker. There is also a grey water washing facility for all emergency vehicles. The fire station was handed to the Mayor of Johannesburg and is recognised as the flagship fire station in Gauteng.
